VP of Product Management at LiveJournal, Jason Shellen, has quit. He twittered this morning: "I resigned my post at LiveJournal on Monday. It was only 3 months but it was long enough to realize it wasn't a fit. Onward and upward!" and Valleywag picked it up.

There are no announcements in [livejournal.com profile] news or [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz. [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz was last updated in December.

Under the heading SUP's Anton Nosik introduces LiveJournal users to European "customer service" Valleywag reports about Nosik's infamous interview. The snark is funny, particularly the last paragraph.

I sent in a tip about this yesterday. Today they asked how I wanted to be credited. I declined and sent them the link to Nosik's explanation in his own LJ.

Six Apart have announced that you can label your own journal or individual entries in it as "adult concept" or "explicit adult content". This is good. It allows users and community maintainers greater freedom of expression. It won't keep anybody out who actually wants to see this content but it covers the backsides of SA, journal owners and community maintainers if there's a stink.

Another new feature is that users can flag content in one of five options:
  • Explicit Adult Content

  • Offensive Content

  • Hate Speech

  • Illegal Activity

  • Nude Images of Minors

The first two will be dealt with by the volunteer abuse team if "several" people flag them up. The other three will be dealt with as before, i.e. completely arbitrarily. No mention of self-harm or suicide is made in the LJ Biz post.

There is a new FAQ entry about flagging and labelling.

In the comments [livejournal.com profile] springheel_jack is the first to point out the most glaring omission -- no mention of any appeals process.

What is good though is that SA are now using icons that clearly identify who is speaking for LJ, e.g. [livejournal.com profile] marta. She is pointed out as the go-to person in the entry, so I searched for her name to find clarifications. In comments from her, it seems that there is a process in place, or perhaps being made up as questions are asked. If that's the case, it would explain why these details weren't revealed in the main post.

I'm sure more holes will be poked in this over the next few days. Watch [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz if you're interested. Might be a full-time job, though.

[livejournal.com profile] rm sums up beautifully why I'm disenchanted with LJ and Six Apart right now. Add to this their continued official support of pro-ana communities and their role in the breastfeeding icons debacle.

Interesting reading in this context is the shortlived blog Exposing LJ Abuse, chronicling the, umm, interesting decisions made by the LJ abuse team. It just begs the question, on what planet is it a good idea to leave enforcing standards (that are nebulous to begin with) to a volunteer team? Wouldn't most reasonable people think that there would be a pretty good risk that you'd end up with lots of trigger happy volunteers keen on enforcing their own little agendas?

ValleyWag reports that Brad is leaving for pastures Googlier. Their analysis is interesting too.

Update at 7.15 on 7 August 2007: Brad confirms that he's leaving.

I've just got off the phone with the letting agents for my flat. They say that the notice period is a month from the rent day as stated in the contract. The rent day is 24. So I have a choice between giving notice for 24 August or 24 September.

That's a bit of a bummer because I'd prefer 24 August but I've just extended my contract till the end of August. So in that case, either GT let me go a week early or they let me work from home, i.e. Cheltenham for the last week. It would also mean I'd have to clean out the flat in the 5 weekends between getting back from my holiday and 24 August. With Kieron's help that's not impossible.

On the other hand if I go for 24 September, I'd have a lot more time. I'll have to talk to Kieron and see what he says before I make up my mind. There's a possibility that I could negotiate with the landlord too. He's fairly easy-going.

The letting agent also said that when I send them the notice, they'll respond with a letter that tells me all about what's required of me wrt cleaning the flat, handing over keys etc.

To Do
  • Ask cleaning people how long do the carpets need to dry after the shampooing before they can be walked on?
  • With the 24 as the hand-over date, when would they recommend that they come in?
  • Put outstanding tasks from Moleskin and LJ into Life Balance
  • Make print-out of tasks to be done before holiday and put in Moleskine

I've moved my Firefox bookmarks to the social bookmarking site, del.icio.us, and added a link to the S2 link list in my LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] sunfell expounds on a backhanded marriage law that has been proposed in the US state of Washington. It's premise is that if the purpose of marriage is to provide a nurturing environment for the children born within the marriage, then couples who do not wish or cannot have children should not be married.

[livejournal.com profile] maetang did this and I liked it so I gakked it.
The instruction is to post the first line from your first journal entry of each month. In one case that's a photo for me. I also added links back to the entry and I only picked public entries.

The times of my entries seem pretty erratic so I've just taken the entry that's at the top of each day rather than try to figure out which one was really the first for the month.

I have 42 feeds in the list on my user info page. My friend Hans Persson went through his list of feeds this morning, so I thought I'd do the same. I'll probably clean up in my list too while I'm at it.

Looking over the list, I have a pretty good mix of usability, productivity, general information and entertainment blogs and personality-based blogs. The vast majority is in English but there's a smattering of Swedish and German-language ones too. I always mention if the feed isn't in English.

There are quite a number of feeds that have very few readers. In some cases that's because I've created the feed and not many people have found it yet, in other cases it's a niche feed such as a a German-language blog about managing a supermarket. Apart from the kind of feeds that everybody and their aunt reads, the number of readers is not a reflection of how much fun it is to read the feed. I've marked my favourite feed in each category with ***.

LJ Tag Site

apel: (Draco Malfoy)
Now this is truly nifty: a site for LJ tags. You can see the most popular tags or look through the whole of LJ according to tags. It looks like it's about 20 hours behind, though.

Some Examples
Cats, Photos
Harry Potter

Sadly only in spirit. But this post should go straight to the San Francisco servers. Read all about the great LJ move on the blog set up specifically for the purpose.
